The overall winners in each category of the competition were announced at CRMA’s 34th Annual Conference June 5-7 at The Westin Providence in Providence, RI.
In the Redesign category, St. Louis Magazine took home top honors in the competition against Berkshire Living, Hudson Valley Magazine, and Milwaukee Magazine. St. Louis Magazine launched a cover-to-cover redesign with the April 2009 issue, introducing a new logo, a revised editorial structure, new departments, and unified typography. “We’re incredibly excited to receive this significant national recognition,” says Editor-in-Chief Stephen Schenkenberg. “Led by art director Kevin Goodbar, our whole staff worked together over the course of six months to rebuild the magazine from cover to cover, both visually and editorially. We’ve been gratified foremost to hear from readers who find the new St. Louis Magazine more informative, more beautiful, and more fun. This gold-medal nod, naming SLM as the finest recent example of a city-magazine redesign, is a special thrill.”
“We are celebrating this national recognition,” says Publisher Leslie Tunney. “Achieving this honor was truly a collaborative effort by our talented staff, and inspires us to aim even higher as we move forward.”
Magazine professionals from around the country chose 142 finalists representing 38 publications in the 25-year-old competition. Magazines of varying circulations competed in 29 categories, including editorial, design, online, community service, and ancillary publications.
More than 75 judges representing publications such as Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, The American Prospect, Body+Soul, Sports Illustrated, Good Housekeeping, Glamour, Taste of Home, Men’s Journal, Budget Travel, The New York Times, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, ESPN The Magazine, The Washington Post, Outdoor Life, USA Weekend, Fitness, and journalism professors from the Missouri School of Journalism selected the finalists. The competition is open to members of CRMA and other city and regional magazines throughout North America that qualify. The contest is a national competition that has been coordinated by the University of Missouri School of Journalism on behalf of CRMA for the past 14 years.
