ST. LOUIS MAGAZINE NAMES JARRETT MEDLIN NEXT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“I’m honored and humbled to step into this role,” says Medlin. “St. Louis Magazine has a long history of talented editors who have provided a voice for the city. I’ll strive to continue that tradition by bringing readers an informative and entertaining look at St. Louis each month.”

Medlin joined the SLM staff in July 2008 and was promoted to executive editor last November. In addition to managing various departments throughout the magazine, Medlin regularly oversees cover stories that span an array of topics, including great places to work, Forest Park, the area’s best doctors, St. Louis salaries, real estate, and more. He also makes regular TV and radio appearances to discuss thepublication’slatest features. During the past two years, he’s worked closely with Schenkenberg and the rest of the staff to create compelling features, monthly packages and long-term projects.

“In the future, we’ll be developing more in-depth stories, expanding our presence online and finding new ways to keep our restaurant, arts and style coverage fresh,” says Medlin. “And of course, we’ll continue to bring readers the scoop on the city.”

Prior to joining St. Louis Magazine’s editorial staff, Medlin served as editor-in-chief of Wichita magazine, contributing writer for 417 Magazine, and field editor at Rural Missouri magazine. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Schenkenberg joined SLM as editor-in-chief in April 2007. Under his leadership, the magazine earned two National City and Regional Magazine Awards—a second-place General Excellence award in 2008 and a first-place Redesign award in 2010. Schenkenberg also served as the editorial lead for the magazine’s online presence, introducing a suite of blogs, a podcast series, and social-media channels, as well as preparing for the major relaunch of stlmag.com in late July.

Schenkenberg will continue to serve as editor-in-chief until Aug. 13, at which point he’ll reopen The Schenkenberg Studio, the editorial and communications shop he ran before joining SLM. This fall, he and his wife, Tamara, will move to Berlin, where Tamara will conduct doctoral research as a Fulbright Scholar in the field of art history.

“This has been a wonderful job,” Schenkenberg says. “While it’s not easy to leave the position or St. Louis, my wife and I are excited about this new European adventure. I’m grateful to publisher Leslie Tunney, as well as the company’s owners—Ray Hartmann and Mark Vittert—for the opportunity to lead our editorial operations in print and online. It’s a privilege to be speaking to St. Louisans every month and indeed every day about subjects like culture and food, education and neighborhoods. I’m really proud of the work produced by this impressive staff. And as the guy who wooed Jarrett to St. Louis Magazine’s staff in 2008, I know what an outstanding editor he is—and what a great EIC he’ll be.”

Each month, the award-winning St. Louis Magazine brings readers revealing profiles, discerning dining and cultural guides, in-depth features, informed commentary and authoritative best-of lists. St. Louis Magazine holds a total of seven City and Regional Magazine Awards.
